Menigoz, Ontonagon upend Wolves

POWERS — Henry Menigoz scored three touchdowns, including both offensive and defensive scores, leading Ontonagon to a 38-16 victory over Carney-Nadeau Saturday.

Ontonagon led 16-0 at halftime on two touchdown runs by Eli Huntzinger and two-point conversions from quarterback Noah Kaarto.

The Gladiators (3-3), used a ball control offense to beat the Wolves in the Great Lakes West Conference game played at North Central High School.

“We wanted to run the ball hard and get openings with our toughness,” said Ontonagon coach Ben Mayer.

“They (Carney-Nadeau) have some good lineman and speed in the backfield. We tried to limit our mistakes and run the ball and we did that.”

Menigoz scored the first of his three second half touchdowns on a one-yard run capping a long Gladiator scoring drive.

Ontonagon led 22-0 before the Wolves connected on their first scoring play with Max Baumler passing to Brett LaFord on a 60-yard pass and run touchdown.

The combination swapped roles on the two-point conversion with LaFord passing to a wide open Baumler to make the score 22-8 halfway into the third quarter.

Menigoz’ versatile plays opened up the game, scoring on a 13-yard run to give the Gladiators a 30-8 lead.

Then his 65-yard pick six interception return touchdown upped the margin to 38-8.

Carney Nadeau coach Jim Belec was impressed with the visiting Gladiators.

“They were exactly what we thought they would be. They are a tough, hard-nosed football team,” said Belec.

The Wolves scored their final points on a hook and ladder touchdown play with LeFord scoring on the 57-yard perfectly executed gadget play.

Belec said his team continues to improve and they had many opportunities in the game for more points and scoring plays.

“You can see the improvement of our team over the last few games,” said Belec.

“We left too many plays out there. When we watch on film, the kids are going to be kicking themselves. They were there for us.”

The Wolves (0-6) who play their home games at North Central, next host Rudyard Saturday in a Great Lakes Conference cross- over game.
