POWERS — Forest Park dispatched North Central 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-10) to open the MHSAA Division 4 District 99 volleyball tournament Monday.

Now for the hard part: Skyline Central Conference champion Carney-Nadeau awaits Forest Park in the semifinals Wednesday.

“They just did their jobs,” Forest Park Coach Ana Cornelia said after the rare sweep. “It was nice to see three aggressive sets where everyone is on the same page.”

A Samantha DePatie kill brought North Central within 21-15 in the first set. But the Lady Trojans (12-16-3) reeled off the next four points, two coming on Elaina Perry ace serves and a Cassie Divine kill.

The Trojans moved to a 21-11 lead in the second set after an Elle Soderberg kill. A Mercedes Simmons’ kill and Laina Toivonen ace closed out the set.

In the third set, kills from Sydney Honkala and Megan Bucek put away the Jets.

Elaina Perry had four of Forest Park’s 13 aces. Mercedes Simmons tallied 10 of the team’s 35 kills. Kelsey Ragio and Laina Toivonen each chipped in six.

“We had a solid performance across the board,” Cornelia said. “We’re hoping to keep this momentum rolling on into Wednesday.”

Forest Park and Carney last met this season in late August. where the Wolves at home took out the Trojans 25-13, 25-14, 25-14. Carney hosts Forest Park at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“We have a game plan and we’re working on some different lineups,” Cornelia said of facing Carney. “We just have to play faster volleyball, move our feet and stay on our toes.”

The Wolves wound up as the league champion with a perfect record.

“They definitely have a good outside,” Cornelia said. “They have smart setters and their back row can basically dig up anything. We just have to keep them moving.

“But if we have too many unforced errors on our side, it will be a long night.”
