Cougars drilled in homecoming

EBEN — This is not the type of homecoming the Superior Central Cougars anticipated.

The Cougars struggled the entire afternoon Saturday, dropping a 62-6 eight-player football decision to the second-ranked Engadine Eagles.

“This is definitely not what I expected,” said Cougars’ coach Sam Eggleston. “We played a nice first quarter. Our game plan was working pretty well. Then, suddenly it seemed like somebody pulled the string and it continued to unravel. We expected the fullback counter to be their bread and butter and they rammed it down our throats. Howard (coach Hood) has an outstanding program. They manhandled us on the line and did what they were supposed to do.”

Superior Central started near midfield on its first three possessions, but found the end zone only on senior Rouben Fink’s two-yard run up the middle with three minutes, 41 seconds left in the first quarter of this Great Lakes Eight Conference East Division game.

It took the Eagles just 23 seconds to respond, taking a 14-6 lead on junior Kyle Gould’s 59-yard dash off left tackle.

Gould added a five-yard touchdown run up the middle for a 22-6 cushion with 7:24 left in the second stanza and the Eagles kept adding to their lead from there.

Engadine senior Jonah Miller scored on interception returns of 42 and 37 yards, a two-yard run and a 12-yard pass from senior Andrew Blanchard. Miller also recorded a quarterback sack.

“Our defense played real well and our offense did some good things,” said Hood. “It was a great effort by our whole team.”

Engadine (5-1) outgained the Cougars 402-188 in total offense. Gould ran 19 times for 166 yards.

Fink rushed 19 times for 188 yards, with all but six of his yards coming before the half. Other Cougars’ backs lost 31 yards.

Sophomore QB Kyle Frusti, under constant duress by Eagles’ defenders, hit just 2-of-9 passes for 17 yards and two interceptions. Fink was 1-of-6 passing for 14 yards and an interception.

The Cougars were without senior QB Beau Rondeau due to a high ankle sprain, and lost sophomore Clayton Collier to a possible MCL injury in the final 1:46.

The Cougars (3-3) host top-ranked Pickford Saturday at 1 p.m.
