Seltzer claims

state golf title;

Hebert upended

BATH — John Seltzer won his second Michigan PGA Match Play golf championship Wednesday.

Seltzer defeated Ferris State University golf coach Kyle Wittenbach 2-up at Eagle Eye Golf Club to claim the title. He had lost in the final match four times.

Wittenberg, a former Northern Michigan University golf coach, upended defending champion Scott Hebert of Traverse City 3-and-1 in the second match Tuesday. Hebert, a native of Escanaba, beat Seltzer on the first hole of a playoff last year to claim his record-setting 16th Michigan PGA Section major championship.

Wittenberg said beating Hebert, a Michigan Golf Hall of Fame inductee, was special. “No one expects to beat him,” said Wittenberg.

Hebert is ranked first in the Michigan section of the Omega Player of the Year race with 90 points. Seltzer is second with 76.5.
