Braves keep right on winning in VB

GLADSTONE – The Gladstone Braves volleyball team continued their winning ways Monday, sweeping Menominee 3-0.

Gladstone (9-2), coming off a solid win last week over Marquette, combined strong serving and team court coverage to beat the Maroons, according to coach Bill Lawrence.

“We have worked on things to make us a better team,” said Lawrence.

“Overall tonight, our floor coverage was very good. Serving is a team strength for us. We have four players serving over 90 percent and the rest of the team is above 85 percent.”

The Braves won set one 25-18 with Taleise Lawrence totaling three kills and Chloe Grenier and Megan Crow with two kills each.

Annabelle Christie led the serving dominance by the Braves with three service aces in the first set victory.

In set two, seven kills by Crow led the Brave hitters up front and Kaleia Lawrence was the assists leader with nine overall in the set.

The Braves led throughout the second set and won 25-16, with the Maroons making ball handling and service errors.

“We played better tonight than we did last week,” said Menominee coach Sarah Betzinger.

“A key for us is communicating and talking and we did that better tonight. We’ve held stready with everybody but we need to take that next step to finish the games.”

Menominee played better in set three and led 17-13, keyed by three service aces from Hannah Ries and two kills by Hannah Cole.

But the Braves battled back to win 25-22, with Crow and Taleise Lawrence registering two kills each in the clincher.

“We are playing well and playing with confidence,” said coach Lawrence.

“We only have two losses and both were in five sets and one was 17-15 in the fifth set.”

Summary:

Gladstone: Crow (11 kills, six blocks), Kaleia Lawrence (25 digs, 22 assists), Taleise Lawrence (7 kills, two blocks, 11 digs), Grenier (6 kills), Christie (4 service aces).

Menominee: Gracie Finger ( three kills), Cole (three kills, four blocks), Ries (three kills, six blocks, three aces), Arikah Bellisle (35 digs), Isabella Berger (28 assists), Emma Hofer (20 digs).
