Bay XC runners fare well

APPLETON, Wis. — Cool temperatures, a wet and muddy course and illness didn’t slow down the Bay College cross country teams Saturday as six of their nine runners ran season-best times in the Eighth Annual Gene Devis Invitational.

Connor Robinson of Powers led the Norse in the men’s eight-kilometer race at Reid Municipal Golf Course in 32 minutes, 38 seconds. He was followed by James Young of Gladstone (32:50), Steve Magnuson of Cheboygan (34:19) and Devonte Grier of Griffin, Ga. (37:39).

The Norse women were led in the 6-K event by Zoie Berg of Gladstone, who took 46th among 119 runners in 25:37. She was followed by Lauren Cousineau of Escanaba (30:29), Jody Peters of Gladstone (30:48), Lauren Peters of Munising (30:55) and Katy Combs of Escanaba (36:36).

Carroll University placed three in the top 10 and wonthe women’s title. Bay finished 11th with 321 points.

“The conditions were cool, wet and muddy because of a lot of recent rain,” said Bay coach Jim Murtha. “Despite over half of the team being sick, we still had six of the nine runners have their personal-best time for the year. Everyone gave it their all and as a result will only keep improving and look forward to next week’s meet in Oshkosh.
