Maroons fall in M&M renewal

ESCANABA — The Menominee Maroons have owned the classic M&M football rivalry, but Marinette finally crawled out from underneath Saturday in the high school football season opener.

The Marines snapped a 10-year losing streak to their cross-river rivals by edging Menominee 22-20 in the 112th M&M Game. Four turnovers were costly for the Maroons, including a pass interception late in the game.

Keagan Monroe ran for 106 yards and passed for 87 for the Maroons. Sam Drees ran for 90 yards for Marinette.

In another opener, Stephenson outlasted Cedarville 46-40 in an eight-player game, with the Eagles breaking from a 26-26 halftime tie. Montell Glover accounted for seven touchdowns for Stephenson, including by a run, a pass reception, a punt return and throwing for a TD.

Glover ran for 114 yards, passed for 45 and caught three balls for 73 yards.

Westwood, expected to be a strong team in the new WestPAC Copper Division, hammered Houghton 42-0, foiling the young Gremlins as they launched play on their new artificial turf field under a new coach, Kurt Huffmaster.

Travis Ojala ran for 193 yards in just six carries to power Calumet past Gogebic 48-6. Ojala had two touchdown runs, of 66 and 61 yards.

Hancock squeezed out a 28-27 victory over L’Anse, getting the decisive score with 22 seconds left to play. Evan Larson blocked a PAT kick that prevented the Purple Hornets from tying the score earlier at 21-21.

Norway indicated it may be one of the top small school teams this season by drilling Lake Linden-Hubbell 54-32. Norway’s Mitchell LeGrave ran for 248 yards in 14 carries and scored five touchdowns. Kellen Klein scored three times while running for 261 yards on 21 carries. The teams, who combined for more than 1,000 yards, scored three TDs in the opening two minutes of the season.
