Esky minor girls in state finals today

JACKSON – Escanaba will play for the Minor Little League Softball (9-10) state championship today in a rematch against top-seed Georgetown.

Esky beat Grosse Pointe 6-4 in the semifinals Tuesday to earn a title game appearance.

Georgetown is now 5-0 in the tournament and 19-2 winners earlier over Escanaba in pool play. Another comeback win Tuesday highlighted Escanaba’s run to the title game.

Grosse Pointe jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of three Esky errors for the early lead.

Escanaba battled all the way back, going ahead 4-3 in the third inning with Madison Mott knocking in two runs and a sacrifice fly by Chloe DuBord scoring the go-ahead run.

“I knew they had it in them and we’ve come back before,” said Escanaba manager Steve Braun.

“We’ve been here before and down before and had to just keep swinging the bats.”

Escanaba added two more runs in the fourth inning on Breleigh Reinhart’s double scoring Janessa Platt, who singled. Clara Braun’s RBI ground out made it 6-4 Esky.

Escanaba pitching ace Mott struck out 15 batters of the 18 outs and allowed four Grosse Pointe hits in the game.

Reinhart and Braun had two hits each to pace the Esky offense.

Manager Braun said his team is looking forward to the opportunity to play Georgetown again, and this time playing for the state championship.

“We want another shot at them (Georgetown). They are a great team but we didn’t play our best game last time against them,” Braun said.

Georgetown, which beat Evart 10-1 in the other semifinal game Tuesday, whipped Escanaba 19-2 in pool play.

Game time for the state championship is 12 noon.
