Copper Country

trio win scramble

HARRIS — A trio of former Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association champions were held to runner-up status Monday in a three-woman scramble at Sweetgrass Golf Course.

The winners came from the Copper Country, with Heidi Olson, Zoe Woodworth and Leah Skoglund teaming to win the 18-hole event with a 63.

Two strokes back in second were Karen Plaisier of Negaunee, Becky Cecconi of Iron Mountain and Kendra (Palmer) Anderson of Marquette at 65.

In third place at 67 were Polly Anderson of Green Bay, Cathy Shamion of Ontonagon and Nancy Osier of Wakefield. In fourth, at 68, were Wendy Schuelke, Donna Gunville and Faith Peterson of Iron Mountain.

Flight winners:

First – Anna Larson, Shianne Uskilita, Lori Linder, 71; Second – June Mayville, Lynn Burak, Debbie Peterson, 76; Third – Diane Bell, Cheryl Melka, Tina Weiland, 79; Fourth – Joyce Hamlin, Candy Swetkis, Anne Okonek, 81; Fifth – Jennifer Fifarek, Cindy Jacques, Cheryl Cheney, 84.

Woodworth wins

HOUGHTON — Zoe Woodworth of Calumet won the women’s championship recently at Portage Lake Golf Club. Woodworth finished a 4-over-par 76 and was 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Melissa Stein. Woodworth was runner-up to Paxton Johnson of Escanaba at the Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association tournament last month.

Vet’s grid picnic

ESCANABA — A free picnic for area veterans and their spouses will be held prior to Friday’s football game at Escanaba Athletic Field, starting at 5 p.m. The picnic is sponsored by the Elks Lodge 354, the Esky Quarterback Club and Escanaba Area Schools. Game admission is also free for the veterans and their spouses. Before the game, the veterans will be on the field for recognition and to greet members of the Escanaba and Petoskey teams.

GLADSTONE — Scott Neurohr led a solid scoring day in the Gladstone Golf Club men’s league Monday with a 2-under-par 70. Steve Bratonia, Kelly Shea and Wayne Marshall had 71, Jeff Bratonia 74, Mark Hager 75 and Dick Pepin and Gary Micheau 77.

In the nine-hole league, Joe Quinn hit a sizzling 31, Korey Smnith 34, Jamie Davison 36, Zack Winkelbauer, Cully Calouette and Tom Gereau 37, Dale Hongisto, Bob Hewitt and Benji Malnar 38 and Don Chouinard 39.
