BAY CITY — The Escanaba softball team stayed unbeaten Saturday after sweeping a doubleheader at host Bay City Western 5-4 and 15-2.
In the nine-inning opener, Esky scored the winning run in the top of the ninth on Dakota Cloutier’s RBI single.
The teams were using the international tie-breaker, which puts a runner at second base to start the extra innings.
Esky collected nine hits in the opener, with Lexi Chaillier producing two singles and two stolen bases. Taylor Gauthier had an RBI single and a key double came in the top of the sixth inning from Heather Bergstrom, who scored and tied the game at 3-3 on Georgia Lehto’s RBI single.
Sophomore Gabi Salo pitched all nine innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs with 11 strikeouts.
“It was a great game and that’s why we went down there,” Esky coach Jamie Segorski said about the opener.
“It was hard-fought game and nobody wanted to give an inch. It was fantastic pitching on both sides.”
In Game 2, freshman Nicole Kamin pitched all six innings, allowing four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
“She threw really well and our defense was rock solid behind her,” Segorski said. “(Gauthier) and Claire (McInerney) were really strong up the middle.”
Esky, which totaled 17 hits, scored five runs in the sixth inning to break open the game.
Chaillier stayed red hot in the nightcap, going 3-for-5 with a solo homer into the wind and two singles. McInerny belted a three-double in the third inning, Gauthier laced two triples and a double and Maddy Griffin, Cassie Wisler, Savannah Barron and Cloutier each added two hits.
The third-ranked Eskymos (6-0) will host Kingsford Tuesday.
“Bay City Western has a storied program and it was nice to go down there and play with them,” Segorski said. “It was two good games and a good confidence booster for the girls.”
