GLADSTONE - Short and sweet.

The Gladstone Braves made quick work of Menominee in their first home meet of the season, Thursday night, routing the Maroons depleted squad 84-0. All but five matches were forfeits, but of the five that were played, three were somewhat competitive.

Ian Brown gave Gladstone's Brayden Williams a good match at 125 and after two periods, Williams held just a 7-5 advantage over the feisty freshman Brown. But in the third period Williams made his move and secured the pin in 4:44. All five matches resulted in pins for the Braves, including Tom Bailey's 17 second conquest of Jacob Peak in the heavyweight class.

Gladstone’s Bradley Gagnon holds Justin?Kaster of Menominee down while stepping over him during their match at 171, Thursday at Gladstone.

"Tommy is wrestling unbelivable this year. He's unstoppable," said Braves head coach Jesse DeBacker. "He's got the mindset, but he'll have a tough one this weekend (at Gaylord). He'll be facing Kyle Prescott of Whittemore-Prescott. He's a state champion and he'll have to be ready for him."

Bobby Beauchamp also dispatched his opponent quickly, pinning Sam Larson in 31 seconds. Jared Syverson required 4:16 to defeat Jacob Ziemba and Bradly Gagnon pinned Justin Kaster in 2:58.

All of Menominee's roster of eight are freshmen with the exception of Kaster, who is a sophomore.

"It's a rebuilding year. We had some kids that didn't come out who came out in the past. It's unfortunate, they're good wrestlers," said Maroons head coach Brian Utke. "I know the group of freshmen we have are pretty excited. They say wait until we're juniors or seniors, so they have it in their heads that they can be pretty tough."

Utke said he was pleased with Brown's effort.

"He's coming around. He's a new kid, a freshman, a physical kid," he said. "We're teaching technique and believing in himself. He's getting a lot better. He's making some freshman mistakes, but if he betters that, gets a little more aggressive on the bottom and attacks a little more, he'll be OK."

Gladstone will compete in the 32-team Gaylord Invitational, Saturday.
