Gladys B. Hawkins

MANISTIQUE - Gladys B. Hawkins, 90, of 1918S Little Harbor Road, Manistique (Thompson), Mich., died June 19, 2013, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

She was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Hiawatha Township, the daughter of James and Hazel (Byers) McDermott and attended Manistique area schools.

In 1946, Gladys married Ralph Ansell. Later on Dec. 6, 1969, she married Leslie Middaugh in Manistique. Leslie preceded Gladys in death on Dec. 17, 1977. On Aug. 5, 1986, Gladys then married Earl Hawkins on Mackinac Island. Earl passed away, April 27, 2001.

Gladys was well known throughout the area as the cook at the Thompson School, the Three Mile Supper Club and at the Indian Lake Golf and Country Club.

She enjoyed sewing and crafting for her family and local children. She enjoyed giving to others and knitted mittens, hats and scarves for the annual Christmas mitten tree. She also enjoyed gardening and loved raising chickens.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Irene (Al) Grimm of Manistique; sons, James (Mary) Ansell of Thompson and Ralph (friend Gloria) Ansell of Thompson; stepdaughters, Shaunna (Brian) Rochefort of Garden and Robin (Robert) Logston of Florida; grandchildren, Terri (Craig) Savage, Jason Grimm, Ryan (Dawn) Grimm, Julie (Scott) Malloy, Amber Ansell and Starla; several step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sister, Ella Wren of Sparta, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, John Schultz; her husbands, Ralph Ansell, Leslie Middaugh and Earl Hawkins; her son, Phillip Ansell; and her sisters, Bernice Goytoski, Esther Nord and Zelda Still.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Lunch will follow at the Manistique Moose Lodge.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 28, in the Thompson Township Cemetery in Thompson, Mich.
