Richard Oslund of Escanaba, at left, and Marvin Gibson of Marquette were both recognized as Hiawathaland’s most senior scouters and were honored for their many years of service to Boy Scouting. The Scouting Years of Service honors were presented at a recent recognition dinner hosted by the Hiawathaland District of Bay Lakes Council.

Hiawathaland District Award of Merit Recipients 2013 were also recognized. The District Award of Merit is the highest award a District can present to its leaders. Honored were:

Betty Williams has been an integral part of her local Scouting program for over 15 years. During that time, she has been in involved in many Scouting activities in her community. She has worked through Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting, along the way holding positions as den leader, Webelos den leader, unit committee member, unit treasurer, and Unit Commissioner. Beyond that service, this volunteer has put in years with the preparation and implementation of the Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp, as treasurer for the Red Buck Order of the Axe, as the last Red Buck District Chair, and as a vice chair in the Hiawathaland District.

Darryl Mattson's involvement in Scouting goes back at least 28 years, when he was a youth member while earning his Eagle rank. As an adult, he has served as an adult partner in Tiger Cubs, a Den leader, a Cubmaster, and unit treasurer. During his tenure as Cubmaster, this volunteer built his pack into one of the largest in the Upper Peninsula. They became a leading unit in Popcorn sales and in Cub Scout resident camp attendance under his leadership. Beyond his own pack, this volunteer has chaired the Pere Marquette Cub Scout Winter Games for four years in an outstanding manner.

Jamie Siedlecki has been active as an adult Scouter for seven years. During that time, he has served as an adult Tiger Cub Partner, den leader, Webelos den leader, Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Scoutmaster. Cub Scouting, to date, has been his forte, with training and proper preparation emphasized so that his scouts receive the maximum from their experiences. This dedication has flowed over in his service in youth ministry at his church and by teaching science to home schoolers. Beyond his unit level contributions, this volunteer has also served as the organizer of the Pinewood Derby finals, the Cub Olympics, the Cub-O-Ree, and the Cub Day Camp in Red Buck. He has been an active member of the Order of the Axe for two years.

Scouting Years of Service was also observed and Scouting has flourished in the Hiawathaland with the two Senior Scouters, Marvin Gibson of Marquette and Dick Oslund of Escanaba, both being recognized for their many years serving the boys.
