Barb Symon Scholarship available for artisans

April 30, 2013
Daily Press

ESCANABA - Artists over 18 years old who are looking to further their education in crafts or arts are invited to apply to the Bonifas Arts Center for funding via the Barb Symon Scholarship. The award of up to $200 will be made once a year as a continuation of the Bay Area Art Association's program and may be applied to workshop or class fees, or travel and lodging expenses.

Symon was a highly respected weaver in the area and a founder of the East Ludington Gallery. The scholarship was established by her husband, Charles, in her memory.

"We're glad to be able to pass along the Symons' good wishes for the Arts community in this way," said Pasqua Warstler of the Bonifas Arts Center. "This award makes it easier financially for artists to pursue the studies that will help them with their work."

Applicants will be accepted until May 1. This year's recipient will be announced at the Opening Reception of the Bonifas Membership Show on May 16.

For information, call the Center at (906) 786-3833, or stop in at 700 1st Avenue South in Escanaba to pick up an application. Center hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
