Devon Brand of Carney-Nadeau Public School was the 2013 Upper Peninsula winner in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. Devon represented the Upper Peninsula by winning the U.P. Zone 5 competition held in Gladstone early in January. He advanced to compete in the state wide American Legion oratorical contest in Grand Rapids on Feb. 23 where he was presented with a runner-up scholarship award valued at $800. Devon is pictured with Zone 5 Oratorical Chairman Mike Bruntjens. This is the second year in a row that Devon was awarded a scholarship. The oratorical contest is open to high school students, grades 9-12, and students who are in accredited home school programs. Additional information on the annual oratorical scholarship can be found online at MichiganLegion.org/programs/scholarships.
