HARRIS -Throughout the first half, the Bark River-Harris girls had trouble finishing as even uncontested layups missed the mark. Carney-Nadeau had trouble simply hitting a shot.

Whatever problems the Broncos were having before halftime, were corrected when they came out to start the third quarter, as BR-H rolled 58-37 Thursday night in a dual Skyline/Central U.P. Conference matchup.

The Broncos were held to 22 points in the first half with Sarah Madalinski limited to six first-half points as she was hounded by Lauren Murray.

However, the Wolves couldn't take advantage of Bark River's shooting troubles as they had plenty of their own, going just 3-for-24 from the field before the break.

"I thought we played real good defense, we just couldn't make a shot," lamented Carney-Nadeau coach Duane Bingham. "It just came down to not making baskets. Defensively I couldn't ask for more. I was more than happy with the effort and I thought we did a real good job on Sarah Madalinski. Lauren was guarding her man-to-man and she did a good job."

The Broncos held a 22-9 halftime lead, but blew the game open as they rolled to a 15-0 run to begin the third quarter. The Wolves didn't get on the board until Morgan Eichhorn hit a triple with 1:33 remaining in the frame.

"If we finished better in the first half, we could have gotten a little more separation. It was ugly, but we played hard and adjusted to the style of game it was," said Broncos coach Joel Schultz. "They didn't score until about 1:30 left in the third and we played solid defense and rebounded pretty decent. Hitting shots also helps. You can feed off that."

Kylie VanBrocklin scored 13 points for the Broncos, including three triples, and also swiped six steals on defense. Madalinski led the team with 14 points, Jordyn Hardy added 10 points and Katie Schultz had seven rebounds and three assists to go with her five points.

Both teams brought the pressure on defense. The scrappy and quick Wolves hung with Bark River in the forcing turnovers department as the teams had 21 and 20 respectively.

"That's the kind of team Bark River is," said Bingham. "They play hard, make you turn it over, then they get shots off of it. They did pretty much what I thought they were going to do. We like to play fast but we played a little faster than we wanted to tonight."

With the big lead, the Broncos' reserves played most of the fourth quarter and the Wolves snapped out of their shooting funk.

Janel Dani led Carney with 13 points while Morgan Eichhorn added nine points on three triples.

"Give Carney credit. They're a scrappy bunch and they got after it and adapted to the style of game," said Schultz. "I wish we could be a little bit cleaner against them because we do have some distinct advantages, but they bring it and that's something we'll have to work on before the next time we see them. I have a lot of respect for that team. They took a big hit (Casey Charlier's injury on Jan. 24) and played hard."

on Monday, Carney-Nadeau (10-8, 6-5 Skyline, 9-5 CUP) hosts Superior Central while Bark River-Harris (15-4, 8-3 Skyline, 8-2 CUP) wraps up the regular season on the road at North Central.
