Taimi Ilona Margaret Russi Nelson

ROCK - Taimi Ilona Margaret Russi Nelson, 93, of 14733 Orchard Lane in Rock, Mich., passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at her home in Rock surrounded by her loving family. She was born in the same house she died at in Rock on Nov. 12, 1919, and was the last of 11 children born to Matt and Hulda (Kentta) Ruusi.

She was raised and lived all her life in the family home in Rock. Taimi graduated from Rock High School in 1938. After graduation she lived at home while working on the farm milking four to five cows and taking care of her parents until they died. Also during that time she worked at the Northland Hotel in Marquette in 1941. After her parents died Taimi worked at Abbott Laboratories, John Manville and also did housework, all in Illinois, always returning to the farm for the summers. On July 21, 1954, Taimi married Albert Nelson in the Finnish Lutheran Church, now known as Faith Lutheran Church in Rock. After spending a couple of winters in Waukegan, Ill., they returned to Rock permanently in 1957. Albert preceded her in death on July 5, 1975. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, and the Rock American Legion Auxiliary.

Taimi Nelson is survived by: son, Russell Nelson of Rock; daughter, Diane Nelson of Rock; first cousin, Eino Nummela of Finland; brother-in-law, Ernest Nelson of Gladstone; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Emil, Victor, George and Jaakko, and sisters, Tyne Johnson, Laila Kaukola, Aili Kaminen, Lil Wirtala and Marie Russi.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Rock. Funeral services celebrating the life of Taimi Nelson will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Erik Heskin officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Rock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available at the Anderson Funeral Home or at the church the day of the funeral. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net.
