Richard ‘Dick’ Berger

MANISTIQUE - Richard "Dick" Berger, 88, of 130 N. Fourth St., Manistique, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at his home.

Dick was born July 4, 1924, in Manistique the son of the late Ferdinand J. and Mabel E. (Pierce) Berger. He was a graduate of Manistique High School, where he excelled in basketball. On June 9, 1951, he married the former Beatrice Elizabeth Olson in Manistique. Dick was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

For 35 years, Dick was employed as a custodian for the Manistique Area Public Schools. His passion was sports and he enjoyed coaching JV basketball and Little League. Dick started the local horseshoe league and the Saturday morning basketball league. He was also an avid beer can collector and loved running his own garage sales. He further enjoyed hunting and cooking venison. Dick's true love in life was his wife Bea, along with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A people lover, Dick had a great insight into the needs of everyone he met and sought with a joyful and generous heart to meet those needs. This was his life's journey

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Beatrice E. Berger of Manistique; his son, Rick (Robin) Berger of Visalia, Calif.; his daughters, JoAnne (Paul) Wood and Flo (Dave) Demers, both of Manistique; his eight grandchildren, Susan, Dominic, Mary, George, Nicole, Ben, Amanda and Grant; his 12 great-grandchildren, Gabe, Jack, Lex, Lilly, Brooklyn, George, Scarlett, Logan, Dakota, Grace, Parker and Olivia; his special sister-in-law, "Auntie" Mae Olson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brothers, Pete (Irene) Berger, Bill (Beryl) Berger, Fred (Helen) Berger and Clarence Berger; and his sisters, Pearl (Steve) Byers, Blanche (Carl) Lynts, Myrtle (John) Driver and Florence (Buck) Jones.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique, followed by parish liturgical prayers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Manistique Area Schools Athletic Department or St. Francis de Sales School.

The family extends a special thank you to the Schoolcraft Memorial Home Care for the superb and loving care given to Dick.
