ESCANABA - The U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association will host its annual Old Fashioned Christmas in the Village this Friday and Saturday at the U.P. State Fairgrounds.

The village will be open Friday from 1-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission to the village is free, but guests are asked to bring non-perishable food items or a new unwrapped toy. The items will be given to local charities.

Visitors who want to do some of their holiday shopping at the village will be able to visit all of the shops in the Antique Village. Many of the shops will be selling holiday-themed items, as well as other handcrafted or old-time goods.

"Of course the whole village will be decorated for Christmas," said Skip Dufour, U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association president.

Visitors will be able to take horse-drawn carriage rides, and will have an opportunity to meet Santa as he makes his way around the village.

"Believe it or not he gets cold, too. That warm, fuzzy suit isn't always so warm and fuzzy," said Dufour, noting that Santa can often be found warming up inside the Agricultural Museum, which will be open to guests.

No matter how cold the temperature is outside, guests will be able to warm up at the Cook Shack, which will be serving hot spiced cider and cookies.

Artisans - such as blacksmiths and weavers - will be demonstrating their craft, as well as selling items. Other demonstrations will be given by the Upper Michigan Central Model Railroad Club and the Delta County Amateur Radio Society.

This year the Gladstone VFW Post will be playing "Taps" and lower the flag at dusk on Friday in remembrance of those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

"It's Pearl Harbor Day and we're open, so we thought it would be a nice thing to do," said DuFour.
