ESCANABA - An Escanaba Public Safety officer recently received a traveling trophy for placing first in this year's National Patrol Rifle Conference and Competition held downstate.

Rob LaMarche, 37, of Escanaba, will be in possession of the championship trophy for one year.

He also received a rifle and an individual plaque in recognition of earning first place in the contest, which tests "for excellence in organizational and individual proficiency."

This is the fifth year Lt. LaMarche has participated in the national rifle competition. He placed second in 2011.

Most of the competition involved the use of patrol rifles but some handgun scenarios also took place, he said. Contestants competed under physical stress such as running, crawling and timed relays that tested on shooting accuracy, he explained. Shots ranged from seven yards to 200 yards and involved 150 competitors.

Two other officers from Escanaba Public Safety also competed in the contest held this summer in Detroit - Jamie Silverstone and Eric LaFave, who also did well in the contest.

"All the training in the department shows at an event like this," LaMarche said. "Our department in general has been supportive of our firearms training program."

In addition to the firearms competition, the participants also attended two days of training. Sponsor of the three-day event is Center Mass Inc., which offers products and services for law enforcement and military industries.

LaMarche said the local department's training and the national competition program help in preparing officers for incidents when someone's life is at stake - either the officer's or someone else's.

LaMarche and his wife, Kelly, have two sons and a daughter. He has been with Escanaba Public Safety for more than 14 years.
