Lois J. Thompson

ESCANABA - Lois J. Thompson, 85, of Escanaba, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, surrounded by her family at Lakeview Assisted Living in Gladstone after a lengthy battle with emphysema.

She was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Gladstone, and was the daughter of Clifford and Helen (Long) Murker. Lois graduated valedictorian from Gladstone High School in 1945 and was the Class President. She then attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and graduated in 1949, summa cum laude, (graduating with a 4.0 + grade average) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and personal psychology. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa National Honorary Society.

Lois opened Hiawatha Chef Supply, Inc. in March of 1955. Lois then met Ralph Thompson and they were married on Sept. 21, 1958, in Duluth, Minn. Ralph preceded her in death on March 9, 1987. Lois and Ralph owned and operated Hiawatha Chef Supply, Inc., with Lois doing the bookkeeping and Ralph doing the sales.

In 1995, Lois retired.

Lois was a member of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Escanaba Elks Lodge No. 354 Auxiliary, Escanaba Country Club, Delta County Historical Society, Escanaba Women's Club and R.C. Hathaway Order of the Eastern Star. Lois started swinging her first golf club at the age of 65 and continued to play until her health would no longer allow it.

She was an avid Green Bay Packer and Detroit Tiger fan, enjoyed playing bridge, reading and traveling.

Lois J. Thompson is survived by: daughter, Candace (Kevin) Oslund of Spalding; sons, Terry (Lynn) Thompson of Fort Collins, Colo., Tracy (Debbie) Thompson of Escanaba; 13 grandchildren, DeAnna (Adam) Ray, Lisa Oslund (Joe Acherman), Amy Oslund (Jason Throm), Carl Oslund and Fiance Angela St. Vincent, Adam Oslund, Regina Thompson (Josh Gardiner), Samantha Thompson, Timothy Thompson, Emily Anderson, Ethan Anderson, Seth Truesdell and Fiancee Kayle Bovin, Shawna Truesdell, and Ryan Thompson; 10 great-grandchildren, Devon Oslund, Mikayla Ray, Cassandra Barglind, Hunter Skoglund, Abigail Oslund, Anthony Oslund, Kelsey Oslund, Tylor Welch, Kaidyn Welch, and Amara Gardiner; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Genevieve Pickard, Anna Sue Norell and Merita Kleiman.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at the Anderson Funeral home in Escanaba.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Lois J. Thompson will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with Rev. David Simmons officiating. Pall Bearers will be: Carl Oslund, Adam Oslund, Adam Ray, Devon Oslund, Seth Truesdell and Lois Godson, Kenny Mike Pickard. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the church fellowship hall.

Entombment will take place in the Gardens of Rest Mausoleum. The Anderson Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net.
