MANISTIQUE TOWNSHIP - A fire which heavily damaged a residential garage in Manistique Township is suspected to have been electrical in origin, according to Manistique Public Safety which battled the blaze Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Public safety and volunteer firefighters were called to a garage fire at 5560W River Road at 3:55 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found the very large pole building engulfed in smoke with flames coming from the northeast corner of the building, stated Public Safety Director Ken Golat in a news release.

The garage was unattached from the residence and is owned by Ronald and Michelle Goudreau. Michelle Goudreau was home with her children at the time of the fire. She called 911 when she saw smoke coming from the garage, said Golat.

Firefighters were able to control the blaze within 20 minutes and spent more than an hour putting out hots spots in the building. Inside the structure were a vehicle, a boat, snowmobiles, and several other personal belongings. The building and contents are considered a total loss due to the extent of the fire damage, according to the news release.

Initial investigation determined the fire started in the northeast corner of the garage while the cause, suspected to be electrical, remains undetermined, said Golat.

Doyle Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted Manistique firefighters. Firefighters were at the scene for two hours.
