Gender and wages

At the recent UP Children's Coalition forum for candidates, State Rep. Ed McBroom was asked about the issue of gender equality and pay. The question stated that, statistically, women still receive approximately 77 cents for every dollar a man receives for doing the same job. Mr. McBroom blamed 'statistics' for the problem, going so far as to say that there is no inequality.

Discussions became heated when the 108th District candidates were asked about supporting equal pay for women in the workforce.

"We know in this country right now, we have many statistics that women are more than ever reaching high-powered positions, more than ever earning more money than they have before," said Ed McBroom (R), 108th District Representative.

"Mr. McBroom, I've been a woman in the workforce for a long time, and I can tell that making more than ever is not making equal pay." responded Sharon Gray, (D) candidate for the 108th District.

I am sorry Mr. McBroom, but I have never met a woman who was able to deposit statistics in her bank account to pay for food, the rent or mortgage or put gas in her car. Shame on you.
