Dennis T. Johnson

ESCANABA - Dennis T. Johnson, 71, 619 S. 13th St., Escanaba, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home following an illness with cancer.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1941, in Stonington, the son of Walter and Bertha (Ericksen) Johnson. Dennis attended grade school at the Masonville Township School in Stonington which was a one room school house which taught children kindergarten through sixth grade. He graduated from Rapid River High School in 1960.

Dennis married the former Patricia Gallagher at St. Patrick's Church on April 7, 1962.

He worked for 34 years at Mead Paper Company, retiring in 2003.

Dennis loved old cars. He and his wife, Pat, attended the Midwest Iola Car Show, where he was a participant for 25 consecutive years with the same 1948 Plymouth. He also enjoyed four-wheeling, traveling, gardening and was a huge Tigers and Lions fan and enjoyed all sports and NASCAR.

He loved his children and grandchildren and was a devoted family man. Dennis will always be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren as the "smartest man in Delta County" which he always jokingly would remind them.

Among his survivors include his wife, Patricia of Escanaba; two children, Daniel "Cathy" Johnson of Wells and Kristine Thibeault of Escanaba; six grandchildren, McKenna, Bethany, Jason, and Kayleigh Thibeault and Danielle and Shawna Johnson; brother, Leonard Johnson of Escanaba and Janet (Richard) Carroll of Stonington; sisters and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Dennis was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cynthia Kay; his parents; and two brothers, Leon and Ronald.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at 5 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church with Pastor Chris Johnson officiating. A meal will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Johnson family with arrangements.
