John McLenithan of Rapid River caught this king-size Drom while fishing off a pier on the Escanaba River at the North Shore boat launch. He took the fish with a 7 1/2 foot ugly stick equpped for brook trout. The rod held an ultra light reel equipped with a six pound test line. Nearby anglers estimated the weight of the fish at 15-20 pounds.
McLenithan’s granddaughter Kaylee Kobasic expertly guided the big fish into a net with an extended, jerry rigged handle. However, they had difficulty lifting the heavy net to the pier.
A watching passerby offered a recipe for cooking the fish which proved to be very good. Although McLenithan has caught many of these fish in smaller size, it was his first experience eating one. “The fish was downright tasty,” he said. (Courtesy photo)
