Happy Big Wish Day

January 10, 2014 - Brian Rowell
ESCANABA — Happy Big Wish Day. I’ll bet most of you didn’t realize today, Jan. 10, is a holiday. In fact, it is the very first Big Wish Day. This holiday wasn’t started to commemorate a historic event. It didn’t take an act of Congress to create. And it wasn’t a gimmick that Hallmark dreamed up to sell cards. Big Wish Day — Jan. 10 — is the creation of my granddaughter Jamie. It seems she wanted a day when everyone could make one huge wish. Big Wish Day was born. How do you celebrate Big Wish Day? According to Jamie, that’s pretty simple. First, throw a party. Then, everyone at the party — kids and adults alike — each make one giant wish. She’s hoping Big Wish Day becomes an annual event. I can’t be impartial in my conclusions, but I think it’s a pretty ingenious concept for a first-grader. I would like to take my granddaughter’s holiday one step further. Why not make your one Big Wish today something that will help others and your community. Spend the rest of the year, until the next Big Wish Day come around on Jan. 10, 2015, working to make that Big Wish come true. You will make yourself and a whole lot of other people happy. Your community will be better for it and so will you. Jamie hopes the idea catches on. So do I. Happy Big Wish Day.
