November is Diabetes Awareness Month and this year’s theme is “You are the center of your diabetes care team”.

Part of the team is a diabetes educator. All persons with diabetes should see a diabetes educator yearly as recommended by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Medicare and most private insurances will pay for diabetic education if it is provided by an accredited program.

There are three accredited programs in Escanaba. One is at UP Health Systems Doctors Park; the educator is Lori Moreau (789-5978). Another is at Bellin Health (786-6488). The third is at UPCAP; contact is Tonya LaFave at 786-4701.
