Dorothy B. Love

MANISTIQUE — Dorothy B. Love, age 98, of Manistique, passed away peacefully at her home, just nine days after her beloved twin sister Doris. Dorothy was born on January 20, 1924, the second twin of Newton E. and Beatrice A. (Jelly) Crawford in Coldwater, Mich. She grew up and attended Coldwater Schools, graduating from Coldwater High with the Class of 1942. The former Dorothy B. Crawford, was united in marriage to her hometown high school sweetheart and love of her life James Marion Love, in San Diego, Calif., on December 7, 1942. Jim preceded her in death on September 23, 1998.

In her younger years, Dorothy was employed as a telephone operator for General Telephone & Electronics, now known as Verizon. After her marriage she became a homemaker for her family. She was a former member of Order of the Eastern Star, the Zion Lutheran Women of the ELCA, and served as a 4-H leader in Manistique for several years. She served as a Girl Scout leader in Grand Ledge when her daughter was in scouting. Dorothy proudly served many years as an election inspector for Manistique Township.

Dorothy was an independent, strong lady, who lived her life with courage and determination to battle through the challenges which presented themselves throughout her life. She was happiest in her country home in Manistique where she never wanted to leave and spent the last 65 years of her life. She always enjoyed and looked forward to holidays and special celebrations when she had all her family with her. She delighted in entertaining her granddaughters with stories from the past. She loved visits from special friends and neighbors to share news of the latest happenings in her life and their lives.

Dorothy was a fantastic baker, and was known for her homemade pies, cookies, breads, and breakfast pastries along with many other delectable desserts. She also had a deft talent with a sewing machine and a crochet hook, stitching many items of clothing for her family and friends, as well as crafting many an afghan or blanket for friends, family, or anyone in need of a bit of cozy comfort. Always a voracious reader, she often stayed up well into the wee hours of the night. One of her few failures in life was her ongoing inability to “just finish this chapter and go to bed,” a trait that appears to be genetic since it was passed on to her daughter and granddaughters. Always an outdoors person, she enjoyed camping, and fishing with her husband Jim, especially when she could out fish him! For many years in the late summer and fall, she worked beside Jim with her own chainsaw cutting and splitting firewood, which they hauled with their Honda four-wheeler and trailer. You could count on never being cold in her home during the winter months! After Jim passed, she couldn’t do without her wood heat and hired a dear neighbor to cut, split and stack her wood. She often scolded her husband Jim about riding the Honda across the freshly mowed yard. After he passed, she took over the Honda, doing exactly the same as her scolding’s to Jim, to complete outside chores including hauling wood to the house. She loved her trusty Honda and rode it daily until the middle of this past winter. She loved backyard wildlife and until recent years you would find her early each morning on her Honda feeding the birds in her yard. In her later years Dorothy enjoyed drives with Ken and Jean Ann through Seney National Wildlife Refuge, and taking rides with them to some of the favorite camping spots where she reminisced with them about the wonderful memories of camping trips with family and dear friends. She lived her life following her handwritten motto, she kept on her desk, “Live Simply, Love Generously, Care Deeply, Speak Kindly, Leave the Rest to God.”

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Jean Ann (Kenneth Rautiola) King, of Manistique, Mich.; son, James (Mary) Love, of Gladstone, Mich.; granddaughters, Dawn Marie (Dru Kelly) Love, of Green Bay, Wis., Jacqueline Jeanne Love of Ishpeming. Mich., great-granddaughter Tiana Kelly, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband James M. Love, she was preceded in death by her parents, Newton and Beatrice, her beloved twin sister, Doris Love, brother-in-law, Ralph “Buss” Love and her nephew Monty Love.

Honoring Dorothy’s wishes, private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family, with internment at the Fairview Cemetery in Manistique.
