Marian Eleanor Gerou Scherer

GLADSTONE — Marian Eleanor Gerou Scherer passed away at the age of 96 on August 20, 2021 at Soderman AFC in Gladstone.

She was born to Aldage “Dave” and Elizabeth Gerou in Escanaba on December 23, 1924.

Marian had four children with her first husband, Donald Nault.

On September 19, 1953 she married Alfred Scherer and they had two sons together. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1999.

In school, Marian played the violin and was a candy striper volunteer at St. Francis Hospital. Marian worshiped in her youth at the Salvation Army and later joined St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She graduated from Escanaba High School.

Marian worked a variety of jobs during her lifetime. In her early years she was employed at her mother’s restaurant, colored photos for a photographer in Detroit, and wrapped meat at Bay de Noc Packing for many years. After retirement, Marian volunteered as a Reading Buddy for Gladstone Schools and for the RSVP program at Christian Park Village, where she brought salads and desserts for patients to enjoy with their coffee on Saturdays. She enjoyed singing and often volunteered to sing with other groups at the nursing home. Marian spent many years attending bingo at the senior center and she enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies.

Marian was a great cook. Her specialties were chicken soup with homemade noodles and date bars.

She is survived by four children, Donna Milis, Donald (Beverly) Nault, Darwin (Louise) Nault, and Dale (Mary) Nault; grandchildren, Michael Milis, Christine (Scott) DeBruin, Donald Nault, Jr., Todd Nault, Marc Nault, Duane (Sara) Nault, Christine Scherer, Andrew Scherer, Brian Scherer, and Bruce Scherer; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred Scherer Sr.; sons, Alfred Scherer, Jr. and Charles Scherer; son-in-law, Dennis Milis; grandchildren, Scott Nault and Steven Nault; and siblings, Leonard Gerou, Octave “Bud” Gerou, Dave “Junior” Gerou, Lawrence (Jean) Gerou, and Bertha (Elmer) Johnson.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 26 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S 13th St, Escanaba. The funeral service will immediately follow with Pastors Dale and Chris Nault officiating.
