Sidney ‘Pete’ B. McKenzie

ESCANABA — “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Sidney “Pete” B. McKenzie, 88, formerly from Camden, S.C., passed away peacefully at Hartman’s Adult Care Home in Escanaba on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Camden, S.C., on May 1, 1931, son of Isaac and Ada (Boyett) McKenzie.

Pete spent 15 years in the United States Army, from June 1949 with an honorable discharge in 1965. He served in Germany, Georgia and Nevada.

He married Joan (Gucky) McKenzie in 1972 and made his home in Escanaba where he worked as a semi-truck driver while selling Christmas trees from their country tree farm.

Pete enjoyed watching baseball and football. He loved driving truck for a living. He was very proud of the Million Mile award he received for driving without an accident and safe driving honors.

He is survived by stepchildren, Janet (Dennis) Roberts of Virginia, Jim (Theresa) Gucky, of Escanaba, John (Arlene) Gucky of Hyde, Judy (Floyd) Nelson of Cornell; numerous grandchildren; and nieces and nephews in S.C.

Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Joan McKenzie of Escanaba; his parents, Ada and Isaac McKenzie; sisters, Sybil Hough and Betty Hyatt; brothers, Hosea, Robert, Corey and William McKenzie, all of Camden, S.C.

In keeping with Pete’s wishes, private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
