Herbert ‘Herb’ H. VanDrese

ESCANABA — Herbert “Herb” H. VanDrese, 87, of Escanaba, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1932, in Cornell, son of Herman H. and Agnes L. (Johnson) VanDrese. Herb was raised and attended school in Gladstone.

Herb served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1956.

Herb was an electrician for 27 years at Harnischfeger and later moved to Sturgeon Bay and was employed with Peterson Ship Building for 12 years.

Herb enjoyed tinkering in his garage there wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix, create or invent. He always gave a helping hand to others and enjoyed cracking jokes. Herb loved going to rummage sales, thrift store shopping and being with his family. In his later years, he enjoyed watching Westerns, old horror movies and the Flintstones.

Herb was married in 1958 and among survivors are his children, Shelie (Dale) Brotski; grandson, Adam Brotski, Darrin VanDrese and Tom (Lisa) VanDrese; siblings, Millie Christensen, Wilfred “Babe” VanDrese and Janice Cornell; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two infant sons, Tim and Michael.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 2 to 3:45 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St. Escanaba. Military honors will take place at 3:45 p.m. and the funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Emmett Norden officiating.

Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone.
