Beverly Clare Lucas

ESCANABA — Beverly Clare Lucas, 91, of Escanaba, Mich., passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at the Bishop Noah Home with her family present.

The daughter of Joseph and Mable (Plante) Cousineau, she was born Dec. 24, 1928, in Iron Mountain, Mich. In her childhood, her family homesteaded 160 acres located five miles off the road in Hardwood, Mich. Beverly was nicknamed “Queen Bee” by her father and she loved to work outside with him. She attended and graduated from Felch High School. On June 21, 1947, Beverly married the love of her life, Sidney C. Lucas Jr., at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Foster City, Mich. Living in Hardwood to start their family, they then moved to Groveland Mine in 1949. In 1955, they sold their farm and moved to the Garden Peninsula. Beverly worked with her husband, Sid, and their eight children to establish the Lucas Family Farm. In 1986, Bev and Sid built their retirement home on the shore of Kate’s Bay.

Beverly was a faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Garden, Mich., and St. Anthony’s Circle; spending time in prayer was a very important part of her day. She was a proud member of the Homemakers Club, American Farm Bureau Federation, and the American Milk Producers. She also served as the treasurer for the Kate’s Bay FCE Extension. In her retirement she enjoyed gardening, photography, taking walks, and she loved to read. She treasured her family deeply and loved spending time with them; especially her grandchildren. She kept up with all of her grandchildren’s health and birthdays as she cared very deeply for them.

She is survived by her sons, Rodney (Sue) Lucas and Scott (Laura) Lucas of Garden, Mich., and John (Gloria) Lucas of Menominee, Mich.; daughters, Linda (Marshall) Patz of Escanaba, Mich., Lana (Ben) Peterson of Fairport, Mich., Lori (Dave) Gembel of Fayette, Mich., Lisa (John) Cyrowski of Garden, Mich., and Kristin (Kevin) Peterson of Garden, Mich.; brothers, Melvin (Loranne) Cousineau and Jim Cousineau, both of Hardwood, Mich.; as well as 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Beverly was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sidney, in 2008; siblings, Camella Troyer, Mayme Parocelli, Lorraine Moore, John Cousineau, Francis Timmer, June Murray, Eileen Nord, and Donald Cousineau.

A visitation will be held to celebrate Beverly at St. John’s Catholic Church in Garden, Mich. on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 11 to 12 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 12 p.m. with Rev. Fr. John Essel officiating.
