Virgil B. Nygaard

ESCANABA — Virgil B. Nygaard, 85, of Escanaba, passed away on Friday, Nov. 15, 2019, at St. Francis Hospital with family by his side. He was born on June 14, 1934, in Shelley, Minn., son of the late Millard and Tillie (Nerison) Nygaard. On June 13, 1959, he married the former Fay Hartman in Collinsville, Ill.

After graduating from high school, Virgil served his country in the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged, he began his love of building which led to his lifelong career of being a builder and contractor.

He is survived by his wife, four children, Denise (Dave Peterson) Makosky, Geraldine (Gerald) LaPalm, Wesley (Peter LaBay) Nygaard and Kyle Nygaard; one sister, Delores Hanson; six granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harlan Nygaard.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Escanaba with Delta County Veterans Council rites at 1:45. A funeral service to celebrate Virgil Nygaard’s life will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Culbertson officiating. A luncheon will follow services at the New Life Church.
