Michael J. Degnan

ESCANABA — Michael J. Degnan “Mike” “Degs”, 79, of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

He was born on June 28, 1940, in Escanaba, son of Robert J. and Florence (Goulias) Degnan.

Mike was a 1958 graduate of Holy Name School and also attended Cloverland College.

On Dec. 28, 1963, Mike married Donna Mae Erickson at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba.

Mike served in the U.S. Army from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1965. He was honored with a Good Conduct Medal, Expert (rifle M-14), and Sharpshooter (rifle).

He was employed with Harnischfeger for 30 years until his retirement in 1985.

Mike enjoyed the outdoors where he loved to hunt and fish. He was a wonderful handyman that could make anything. In his younger years, he enjoyed snowmobiling. His biggest joy came from being with his grandchildren and watching their sports and activities that they were involved in. He enjoyed needlepoint and made one for each grandchild. He loved his family and doted on his wife, Donna.

He was a member of St. Anne’s Church and the Ford River Lion’s Club.

Mike is survived by his wife, Donna of Escanaba; children, Michelle Howe of Kingsford, Scott (Karen) Degnan of Escanaba, Kelli Danz of Escanaba; son-in-law, Robert Bower of Bark River; grandchildren, David (Lauren) Bower, Ashley Brown, Jordan (Nicole) Bower, Mitchell Johnson, Macy Degnan and Drake Degnan; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Gina Bower; granddaughter, Rochelle Horwitz; grandson, Owen Johnson; and siblings, Mary Nelson and Robert Degnan.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. Military honors will be at 3:45 p.m. and the funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Deacon Terry Saunders officiating. At the conclusion of the service, a meal will be served in the funeral home dining area.
