Karen L. Haas

GARDEN — Karen L. Haas, 67, of Garden, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at her home from natural causes.

Karen was born in Dayton, Ohio, on June 25, 1952, daughter of George and Mary (Coovert) Seth. She was raised in Dayton and Milwaukee, Wis. She graduated from Washington High School in 1970, earned her associate’s degree from Bay College, and then attended Northern Michigan University.

On June 16, 1975, Karen married Walter “Wally” Haas in Waukegan, Ill. They celebrated 41 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on July 16, 2016.

She was the trustee for the Village of Garden in 2007 and then the village clerk from 2008- 2017. Karen worked from 1990 until 2014 as a rural carrier for the Daily Press until she retired due to health issues.

Karen loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed attending her daughter and grandchildren’s sporting events in addition to the many other kids who always considered her “mom”/“gram.” Karen also loved her monthly lunches with her girlfriends, the holidays and cooking and baking for her family.

Among survivors are her daughter, Mary (Craig) Barnhart of Escanaba; grandchildren, Colin (fiance Brittney Paquin) and Morgan Barnhart, all of Escanaba; sister, Lois Shearer of Dayton, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wally; parents; and siblings, Martha Duke, Virginia Oswald, Ben Seth and Ray Seth.

A celebration of Karen’s life will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. John the Baptist Church hall in Garden at 1 p.m. A meal will follow immediately after.
