ESCANABA — Duane L. Buckland, age 68, of Escanaba, passed away Thursday morning, May 23, 2019 at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. He was born on February 20, 1951 in Escanaba, the son of Ernest and Margaret (Larson) Buckland. Duane was raised in Escanaba and was a 1969 graduate of Escanaba High School. He went on to further his education and attended Diesel Technician School in L’Anse, Mich. Duane married the former Sandra Kennedy on July 22, 1972 in Cooks, Mich. Together, the couple shared 46 years of marriage and raised four children.

Duane was employed by the Delta County Road Commission for many years and also performed maintenance duties for Delta County until his retirement in 2007.

He was a longtime member of The Salvation Army in Escanaba and was also a member of the Irish Oaks Golf Course in Gladstone. Duane was an avid golfer, enjoyed watching stockcar racing in both Escanaba and Norway, and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He also loved visiting with people and could always keep a conversation with anyone. Duane was a people person and one could often find him sitting on Walmart’s entrance bench as their unofficial greeter. For many years, Duane and Sandy enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arizona.

Duane L. Buckland is survived by his wife, Sandra of Escanaba; children, Roxanne (Daren) Spencer of Escanaba, Rachelle (Jason) Porath of Garner, N.C., Mindy (Robert) Turchin of Escanaba, and Greg Buckland (Katy Wery) of Escanaba; eight grandchildren, Allison, Zoe, Evan, Jayla, Brielle, Rachel, Trenton, and Hayden; three sisters, Lois Lavesque of Brooklyn, Mich., Vicky (Don) Karl of Oshkosh, Wis., and Sharon Davis of Escanaba; one brother, Denny Buckland of Escanaba; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith Buckland, Alvin Buckland; five sisters, Shirley Larson, Elaine Olson, Betsie Skrede, Jackie Lynaugh, and Jean Smith.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, May 27, 2019 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Duane will follow at 4 p.m., Monday, in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Major Lee Morrison officiating. A luncheon will be served at the conclusion of the services at The Salvation Army in Escanaba. Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials please be directed to The Salvation Army of Escanaba for their summer youth camps.
