Kermit Vernon Johnson

ESCANABA — Kermit Vernon Johnson, 96, of Escanaba, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 12, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Jan. 3, 1923, to the late Charles and Thea Mae (Moe) Johnson and was a life-long resident of the Ford River and Escanaba area. Kermit retired from the Delta County Road Commission after 30 years and then continued working with Peron’s Trucking for an additional 11 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 48 years and served in a variety of ways, including serving on the Church Council, the “Over 60’s Club,” ushering, and he could always be found working in the church kitchen. Kermit was also an active member of the Swedish Club and served on the St. Francis Auxiliary.

Kermit Vernon Johnson is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Arvilla; son, Ralph (Jean) Johnson; daughter, Darlene Johnson Rappette of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Michelle (Dennis) Dalliare of MA, and Paul (Monica) Squires of Nashville, Tenn.; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Johnson, McKenna Johnson, Logan Johnson, Caleb Squires, Brayden Squires, Gaines Squires, Cole Jones, Ivy Heinrich and Amy Rappette; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Kermit was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine Blixt Johnson, to whom he was married 47 years; 11 siblings, Emil, Bert, Ralph, Fred, Albert, Clarence, Arthur Johnson, Esther Johnson, Jenny Green, Alice Leech, and Ruth Barringer; daughter-in-law, Barbara VanEffen Johnson; son-in-law, Dennis Rappette; and his grandson, Michael Johnson.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Kermit will follow at 12 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Dennis Meyette officiating.

A luncheon will be served at the conclusion of the services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
