Dennis Edward Schneider

ESCANABA — Dennis Edward Schneider, 86, of Escanaba, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, at North Woods Place in Escanaba.

He was born in Breckenridge, Minn., on Aug. 11, 1932, son of Joseph and Catherine (Fleming) Schneider. He was the third of 17 children raised on a farm. In 1950, he graduated from Breckenridge High School and spent two years selling the St. Anthony Messenger, a Catholic magazine.

He entered the Army during the Korean War. After serving for two years, he was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1954. With VA assistance and money earned from working on the railroad, he was able to attend the University of Minnesota. The same day he graduated, he was married to Rose Marie Schecher.

Together they moved to Escanaba where he started working as an accountant for Andy Skaug. In 1961, he passed his CPA exam and became a partner with Andy. Eventually, Andy sold his share and the firm expanded, changing its name to Schneider, Larche, Haapala & Co.

Dennis taught briefly at Bay College and answered questions on ‘Ask the CPAs’ on PBS television for 10 years (1988-1997). After retirement in 1998, he tutored fifth grade math students at Franklin School for 10 years (1999-2009). He loved to spend time with his family and pets, bowling, playing bridge, golfing, and horseshoes. He performed in ‘The Whistlers’ group, which became very popular in town.

He is survived by his loving family which includes his wife of 60 years, Rose Marie; five children, Thomas Schneider (Julie) of Schoolcraft, Mich., Susan Schneider of Escanaba, Denby Holmes (Robin) of Escanaba, Diana Lawrence (James) of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Joseph Schneider of Greenville, Wis.; 14 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christopher, John, Kara, Alex, Kiersten, Elijah, Joel, Rachel, David, Nicole, Michelle, Kristy, and Weston; seven great-grandchildren, Grace, Eli, Caitlin, Carolina, Lucas, Camila, and Layla; and siblings, Rita, Kathleen, Laurel, Jim, Ruth, Nita, Barbara, Colleen, Jane, and Ted.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Mike, Larry, Bernie, Ken, Dan, and Lynda, and infant granddaughter, Bethany.

The visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Crawford Funeral Home at 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The veteran’s service will begin at 11 a.m. A time to share memories will conclude the services. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Escanaba.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Delta County Cancer Alliance.
