Susan ‘Sue’ Lee Standing

ESCANABA — Susan “Sue” Lee Standing, 70, of Escanaba (Soo Hill), passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Sunday morning, Aug. 26, 2018, while fighting her fourth bout with cancer. She was born on Sept. 27, 1947, in Escanaba, the daughter of Emil and Irene (Mattson) Johnsen. Sue grew up in Escanaba and was a 1965 graduate of Escanaba High School. After graduation, Sue worked part-time at Ludington Motors as a clerk while attending Bay College. She was hired at Mead Paper Company in March of 1966, where she worked her entire career until her retirement on April 1, 2003. Sue spent her 37 years at Mead working in the Payroll/Accounting Department. The former Susan Johnsen married Thomas “Tom” Standing of Gladstone on Dec. 29, 1972. Together, the couple shared 45 years of marriage and raised one daughter, Kristin. Susan was a member of West Point Parents Club, Mead 25-Year Club, Altrusa of Escanaba, former member of Curves, served on the Foster Grandparent Advisory Board, Peninsula Federal Credit Union director for 30 plus years, and was chairman of the Supervisory Committee for the Peninsula Federal Credit Union. Sue was a former director of “Women Helping Women” for the Delta County Cancer Alliance, where she enjoyed offering encouragement to the many breast cancer survivors she visited. Sue enjoyed the Annual Fetterman Party started by Sue’s mother, visiting the local casino, scratching lotto tickets, watching Packer games, and spending time with her family and many friends. She always brought a smile into every room; Sue was an eternal optimist who spread joy to everyone she met.
