Marcella M. Quick

MANISTIQUE — Marcella M. Quick, 86, of Dodge Lake, Manistique, Mich., died April 4, 2018, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

She was born Aug. 3, 1931, in Brevort, Mich., the daughter of Floyd and Violet (Movalson) Miller and moved to the Manistique area as a child. She attended Manistique area schools and was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1949. She continued her education at the Augustana Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago where she received her R.N degree.

On Oct. 11, 1952, the former Marcella M. Miller married John Paul Quick in Manistique. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique and at Dodge Lake. “J.P.” unexpectedly preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1989.

Marcella worked at the Community Hospital in Big Rapids, Mich., and the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique where she held several staff and supervisory positions. For many years, she was employed as the R.N. at the Manistique offices of Dr. James H. Fyvie and Dr. Duane L. Waters at their downtown location and at the Manistique Medical Center.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique where she served as the President of the Church Council, was the Zion Choir Director, and also taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the Lutheran Church Women. She was a Past-President of the Manistique Women’s Club, a member of the Elkettes, and the Indian Lake Golf and Country Club.

Very community-minded, she was a Brownie leader, a member of the Fourth of July Committee, and was the chairman of the Kiddie Parade for years. She was also an active member of the Schoolcraft County Bay Cliff Health Camp board.

In her free time, she loved to entertain family and friends, play cards, golf, dance, and grow roses.

Marcella is survived by her children, Pamela A. Quick of Manistique, Paula J. Quick of West Allis, Wis., and John H. (Christy) Quick of Battle Creek, Mich.; loving companion, Donald Carlson of Manistique; grandchildren, Steven Berghoef, Sara Berghoef, Katie Berghoef, Kaylee Cooper, Taylor Balczak, and Paige Balczak; great-grandchildren, Mason, Madison, Asher, Zayde, and Everly; sisters, Helen Lynts of Manistique and Eleanor Talley of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Lloyd (Karolyn) Miller of Naples, Fla.; along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Knuth; and her brothers, Richard, Keith, Floyd, and Kenneth “Tim” Miller.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Monday, April 9, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique. Burial will be in the Hiawatha Township Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Manistique Area Schools Scholarship Foundation, to the Zion Lutheran Church, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
