John Holger ‘Hoagie’ Ostlund

BARK RIVER — John Holger “Hoagie” Ostlund, 90, of N16882 Eustis Road, Bark River, went to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, Tuesday morning, April 3, 2018, at his home in Bark River. He was born on Jan. 9, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Axel and Jenny (Larsson) Ostlund. As a young boy, his parents moved the family to the Upper Peninsula and made their home in Flat Rock. Hoagie graduated from Escanaba High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II as a pharmacy technician. He married Eileen Harbath in 1949 and returned to work at Mead Paper Company where he was employed for 43 years until his retirement in February of 1990. Hoagie then dug into his greatest enjoyment and passion, farming, with his wife, Marlene, who he married in 1989. He had a love for the outdoors and a strong Christian faith as a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Escanaba.

Hoagie is survived by his wife, Marlene Deming Ostlund of Bark River; children, John Ostlund, James Ostlund, Peter Ostlund, Kathy (Donald) Schuetter, Tim (Ann) Deming, Dan (Laurie) Deming, and David Deming; grandchildren, Jennifer (Dennis) Harding, Ashlee (Tony) LaPlant, Joe (Katie) Ostlund, Chrissy (Dave) Columb, Greg (Kate) Schuetter, Steve Schuetter, Nicole (Rob) Flanagan, Joshua Aiken, Jamie Deming, Brittany (Curt) Knauf, and Cody Deming; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Kim Luhman; sister-in-law, Ruth Carlson; nephews and nieces, Lynn (Gary) Quinn, Mark (Lana) Ostlund, Kris (Bernie) Clements, and Cheryl (Bill) Gasperich; and four great-nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, Hoagie was preceded in death by infant son, Michael, and brother, Rune Ostlund.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 7, at Calvary Baptist Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Hoagie will follow at 1 p.m., Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Brian Swillum officiating. A luncheon will be served afterward in the church fellowship hall.Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions please be directed to Lake Ellen Bible Camp.
