John E. Kroll Sr

ESCANABA — John E. Kroll Sr. passed away Friday morning, March 30, 2018, at Bishop Noa Home surrounded by his loving family.

John was born Aug. 10, 1926, in Escanaba, the son of Michael and Rose (Vankas) Kroll. He graduated from St. Joseph High School. John served in the Merchant Marines during World War II before moving to Milwaukee. While living in Milwaukee, he worked for the railroad.

He was united in marriage to Catherine (Rose) Kroll in 1951 at All Saints Catholic Church. Together they made their home in Escanaba raising their three children. John retired in 1987 from Doctor’s Park as maintenance director.

John enjoyed gardening, cooking and fishing. His sense of humor will be greatly missed.

In addition to his loving wife of 67 years, Catherine, he is further survived by: two sons, John (Lori) Kroll Jr. of Gladstone, Mark (Carol) Kroll of Libby, Mont.; one daughter, Mary Beth (John) LaPorte of Escanaba; one brother-in-law, Bud Reese of Escanaba; grandchildren, Courtney Anthony, Robert Anthony, Benjamin (Christine) Kroll, Emily Kroll, Megan Kroll, and Allison Kroll; great-grandchildren, Abby, Benjamin, and Catherine Kroll, and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by: parents, mother and father-in-law, Anton (Elizabeth) Rose; brothers, Frank (Katie) Kroll, Joseph (Aileen) Kroll; infant brother and infant sister, Mary and Michael Kroll; sisters, Ann (Milton) McGovern, Sophie (William) Ettenhofer, Ruby (Earl) Gustafson, and Caroline Reese; brother-in-law, Louis Bartol; sisters-in-law, Mary E. Rose, Margaret Bartol.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, April 4, from 1 until 2:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will follow visiting hours at 3 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Escanaba. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. John will be laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Bishop Noa Home or St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
