Michael A. Manning

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Michael A. Manning, 72, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday, March 18, 2018, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in the loving care of his family.

Born Sept. 30, 1945, in Marquette, a son of Patrick and Mary (Prosen) Manning, Mike was raised in Marquette and graduated from Bishop Baraga High School, Class of 1963. He later earned his BA degree from Northern Michigan University in 1971, MBA from California State University in 1975, and PhD from Southern Illinois University in 1998. Mike most loved his teaching career at Southern Illinois University, Diablo Valley College, and St. Mary’s College. Mike embraced life with kindness, curiosity, and humor, always questioning and taking on new challenges. Through the years his career path reflected his love of learning, from caddie and newspaper boy to salesman, soldier, sheriff’s deputy, banker, mortgage broker, extended education program administrator and university teacher. He was an advocate for animal and human rights, a collector, a golfer, fisherman, car, wine, and astronomy buff, a gambler, reader and scholar. Mike was raised in faith at St. Peter Cathedral, Marquette, lived his faith and held in his heart most preciously that he was a husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, teacher and mentor. He lived with integrity and honesty, cared deeply about the underdog, those less fortunate and those whose lives were troubled or difficult. He is dearly loved and will be forever missed.

Mike is survived by his wife, Carol Manning; brother, Pat Manning; sisters, Mary Mitchell (Peter) and Kathy Hodges (Wally); brother-in-law, Bill Griewe (Judy); sister-in-law, Barb Bennett (Jesse Farkas); brother-in-law, Dennis Laine; and nieces, nephews, Stephanie Laine (Nate Weston), Christopher Laine, Michael Hodges, Jason Bennett (Danielle), Michelle Underwood (Shane), Matt Griewe, Lisa Hazel (Chris), Jenny Lupino (John), Debbie Koish, Marcia Nichols, Peter Mitchell (Martha), Mark Mitchell (Ava); and special friends, Jessica Leng (Jeremy), Jaysson Reno (Sharlee), Alexandria Aquilon (Hayden), Ann and John Kirby, Jay Reno (Marci), and many great-nieces and nephews.
