Janet H. (Platteter) Johnson

ESCANABA, Mich. — Janet H. (Platteter) Johnson, 99, died peacefully on Feb. 11, 2018, at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba, Mich.

Janet was born in Stratford, Wis., on Dec. 18, 1918, daughter of James J. Platteter and Teresa (Hayes) Platteter. The family moved to Kingsford, Mich., in 1927. Janet graduated from Kingsford High School in 1933.

In 1938 she married Clarence Johnson of Beechwood, Mich. They lived for many years in Iron River, Mich., where they raised their daughter Janice (Johnson) Tolfa. Janet was an active member of the Catholic community, enjoyed volunteering, and also worked for the Chrysler Corporation for over 10 years before retiring in 1984.

After the death of her husband, Janet moved back to her family home in Kingsford where she enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, playing scrabble with friends, and participating in water aerobics for many years. She became a resident of the Bishop Noa Home in 2010. Janet enjoyed word games of all kinds, cribbage, music, and often had the luck of the Irish playing Bingo. Janet loved living with the sisters, residents and caring staff of the Bishop Noa Home. A place that always appreciated her kindness, quick wit and knew she was full of fun.

She leaves her daughter, Janice (Johnson) Tolfa of Escanaba; grandchildren, John Tolfa of Midland, Jean (Tolfa) Hansen of Bloomfield Hills, Joan (Tolfa) Messenger of Baltimore, and Jill Tolfa of San Francisco; six great-granddaughters Jennie Tolfa, Kali Tolfa, Gina Tolfa, Mollie Hansen, Hannah Hansen and Caitlyn Messenger; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by both parents; husband, Clarence Johnson; son-in-law, James Tolfa; granddaughter, Mary Ann Tolfa (stillborn infant); sisters, Valerie (Platteter) Brown and Cathryn (Platteter) Neumann; and brother, James F. Platteter.
