Earl R. Reno

GLADSTONE — Earl R. Reno, 89, of Gladstone, passed away Thursday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2018, at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

Earl was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Escanaba, the son of Earl S. and (Irene) LaBlanc Reno. He was raised in Escanaba and graduated from the Escanaba High School in 1946. Shortly after graduation he served in the United States Army and was a Korean War veteran. He was united in marriage to Betty C. Trottier on Sept. 11, 1954, at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Escanaba. Earl retired from the Escanaba Post Office and was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Brother Felix Counsel, Gladstone American Legion Post 71, AMVETS and the Gladstone Golf Club.

Earl loved his children and spent weekends camping with family and friends, telling long tales around the campfire, and creating lifetime memories with his children. As an avid carpenter, he was the first to build a fort, sandbox, swing, or help remodel a room or build a deck. Readying for retirement, he was able to build the retirement home which he and his wife enjoyed near the shores of Little Bay De Noc.

Earl enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, never missing a special event, a chance for a prom picture or attendance at a sporting event. He could always be spotted cheering in the bleachers at any grandchild’s event ready to slip a little spending money in secretly with a congratulatory handshake.

His love of golf was discovered in his retirement years with many a sunny day being spent with family friends chasing balls on the Gladstone Golf Course.

Being an avid fisherman, he was the first to introduce his grandchildren and family to his love of Lake Michigan bringing back many a delicious dinner and story of the one that got away.

He will always be remembered in his later years pedaling his new red Schwinn around the neighborhood visiting with the neighbors and checking on the local catch. Never the person to turn down a chance to spend time with friends, he was always ready for a good game of cribbage or a lively game of cards with family and friends.

Earl is survived by his wife Betty of Kipling; his son, Robert (Denise) Reno of Pulaski, Wis.; his daughters, Lori (Bill) Megow of Manitowoc, Wis., and Mary (Scott Maki) Reno of Gladstone; grandchildren, Earl (Amanda) Reno, Corey (Will) Yackel, Andrew (April) Megow, Erik (Julie) Megow, and Alexandrea Platias; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Reno, Elden and Greta Megow and Bodhi Yackel; sister, Beverly Menard of Escanaba; sister -in-law, Jeanette Reno of Escanaba; brother-in-law, Wayne Berthaume and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas; his parents; sisters, Joanne (Clarence) Robitaille and Judy Berthaume; and a brother, Allen “Bud” Reno.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 10 to 11:15 a.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone.

Military honors will be presented at 11:15 a.m. by the Gladstone American Legion Post 71. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone with Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Earl will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
