ESCANABA — Herbert R. Caron, 91, of 327 N. 20th St., Escanaba, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Monday morning, Dec. 18, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Feb. 9, 1926, in Masonville Township., Mich., the son of Alphonse and Orina (Bennett) Caron. Herbert was diagnosed with polio in 1934 and unfortunately, he had to live with some effects of the disease throughout his lifetime. He attended schools in Masonville, Rapid River, and Escanaba. Herbert met the love of his life in fourth grade, Rita VanEffen, in 1937. On Feb. 8 1947, Herbert and Rita were married at St. Patrick Church in Escanaba. They cherished each other for 71 plus years and raised a loving and close-knit family. Herbert was employed at Andex Industries in the maintenance department until his retirement in February of 1991. Herbert was strong in his Catholic faith and was a member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick Parish in Escanaba. Family was an enormous part of his life. It was a weekly ritual for the entire family and close friends to get together every Friday and Sunday at Herbert and Rita’s home. He was so proud of his family and cherished all of the laughs and memories that were made.

Herbert R. Caron is survived by his wife, Rita of Escanaba; sons, James (Sharon) Caron of Gladstone, Donald Caron of Escanaba, and Raymond Caron of Escanaba; daughters, Sherri Swanson of Escanaba, Tracy (Jamie) Bruce of Escanaba, and Jean Ann (Randy) Maluge of Escanaba; grandchildren, Sylvia (Paul Quadros, Jodi (Kevin) Jicha, Herbert Swanson, Donald, Jr. (Vicky) Caron, Deanna (Rick) Boucher, Raymond James Caron, Lindsay (Corey) Ostrander, Jami (Mike) Sharrow, Nicole Bruce, Brittany (Dane) Casperson, Anna Burch, and Travis Burch; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence “Larry” Caron; five brothers; and three sisters.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 22, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Herbert will follow at 1 p.m. Friday in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Father Eric Olson officiating. Light snacks and refreshments will be served during the visitation in the Anderson Funeral Home fellowship area. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
