CORNELL – Melvin Roy LaCosse, 71, of 11023 North River Lane, Cornell, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016, at home unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack.

Melvin’s family will receive friends on Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Perkins. Funeral services celebrating the life of Melvin Roy LaCosse will follow at noon with Rev. Diane Srutowski officiating. Luncheon will follow at the Bethany Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.

Burial will follow at the Perkins Cemetery in Perkins. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the LaCosse family.

CORNELL, Mich. – Melvin Roy LaCosse, 71, of 11023 North River Lane, Cornell, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016, at home unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack.

Melvin was born March 27, 1945, in Escanaba, Mich., the son of Wilfred Joseph and Margaret Iola (Johnson) LaCosse. He was raised in Perkins where he was a 1963 graduate of Perkin’s High School. Melvin excelled in basketball while at Perkin’s High who always found the bucket and he was nicknamed “Gunner” by fellow teammates and fans.

Melvin was united in marriage to the former Donna Brandt on Nov. 13, 1982, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River. Melvin worked in the woods with his dad when he was old enough to carry his own peeling spud. He then owned his own logging business until he broke his neck. He started working as a driver for Hanson Potato Farm in Cornell, and worked there for over 20 years. He semi-retired at 62, but kept driving for the farm until his demise.

Melvin enjoyed camping, fishing, bird hunting, walking his dog, bird watching and watching the squirrels come get their peanuts. He was an avid Tigers, Lions and Michigan State basketball fan. He really enjoyed being a grandpa and spending time with the grandchildren. From blowing bubbles, helping make the Halloween scarecrow with leaves, taking walks or teasing them about the witches house next door. He was a very caring good-hearted man who would help anybody he could.

Melvin faithfully attended Bethany Lutheran Church in Perkins where he had served as a past council member, treasurer and Youth Group leader.

In addition to his wife Donna, survivors include: sons, Edwin (Joanne) LaCosse of Rapid River, Samuel (Maranda) LaCosse of Kentucky, Andrew (April) LaCosse of Escanaba and Timothy (Julie) LaCosse of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Rachel, Shelby, Levi, Evonna, Elonna-Sherae and Isaiah; sister, Bonnie Phalen of Gladstone; sisters-in-law, Wanda LaCosse of Gladstone, Marilyn LaCosse of Rock and Dale (Brad) Edwards of Grand Rapids, Mich.; brother-in-law, John Brandt of Stonington; mother-in-law, Ruth Brandt of Rapid River. Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and special friends, James and Julie Hanson of Cornell also survive.

In addition to his parents, his son, Gregory, daughter, Lisa, and brothers, David and Victor, preceded Melvin in death.
