Beatrice M. McDermott

ESCANABA – Beatrice M. McDermott, 79, of 901 S. 19th St., Escanaba, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 19, 2013, at her home.

Bea was born in Escanaba on Nov. 17, 1933, the daughter of Robert and Beryl (McDonald) Nebel. She graduated from Gladstone High School Class of 1951 and from Chicago Teacher College in 1955.

She taught school in Oak Lawn, Ill., Essex, Md. and retired from the Escanaba school system.

Beatrice M. “Bea” Nebel married Thomas Patrick McDermott on Dec. 26, 1960, at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba.

She was a member of St. Joseph/St. Patrick’s Church where she taught elementary, junior high and senior high CCD classes for 13 years. She was a Eucharistic Minister to shut ins at St. Joseph/St. Patrick’s Church. She was a life member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and its Delta County Chapter and a member of Bay Sages.

Beatrice M. McDermott is survived by her children, Michael (Michelle) McDermott of Mason, Mich., Patrick McDermott of Tampa, Fla., Kathryn Collignon of Astatula, Fla., Ann McDermott of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Nicole, Lauren and Erin McDermott of Mason, Mich., Luke and Kenan Collignon of Astatula, Fla.; sister, Gladys (Jack) Baitman of Elgin, Ill.; brother, Ernest Nebel of Kipling; sister-in-law, Laura Nebel of Philadelphia, Pa.; and many nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Thomas on May 30, 2000; and a granddaughter.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorials may be directed to the Thomas and Beatrice McDermott Scholarship Fund at Escanaba Area High School or the elevator fund at St. Joseph/St. Patrick’s Church.

Beatrice wants to thank all of her super neighbors and friends for their caring, sharing and the great joy they provided her during her lifetime.

Burial will be held in the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone.

The Crawford Funeral Homes assisted the McDermott family with funeral arrangements.
