ESCANABA — Escanaba Public Safety Department was able to quickly extinguish a small utilities-related fire Monday that caused minimal damage to a residence on 10th Avenue South.

People at the home reported the fire just before 3 p.m. at 1820 10th Ave. S. and were able to evacuate the house without incident, including children and pet, according to Escanaba Public Safety.

There was fire when the first officers arrived, but they “were able to put it out right away,” Escanaba Public Safety Director Darren Smith said.

Neighbors could smell faint burning, but no smoke or fire appeared visible from across the street.

“More or less, the rubber burned that was covering a gas line,” Smith said. Aside from that, damage was minimal, “probably next to nothing for smoke, and no water damage,” the director added.

Starting at $3.50/week.
