Voters pick candidates for November election

ESCANABA — The people of Delta County have spoken and selected a few [new] and familiar faces to move on to the November general election and represent them in local government.

COUNTY CLERK AND REGISTER OF DEEDS

Voters across Delta County who opted to vote on the Republican ballot selected Nancy Przewrocki (formerly Nancy Kolich) to continue serving as the Delta County clerk and register of deeds. Przewrocki received 3,124 votes (75.71%) to Moberg’s 989 votes (23.97%).

COUNTY COMMISSIONER – DISTRICT 1

For District 1, John Malnar, who currently holds the seat, bested Sandra Skiba, with 552 votes (55.87%) to Skiba’s 433 (43.83%) in the Republican primary. Because there are no Democrats running for the seat in November, Malnar will be unopposed in November.

COUNTY COMMISSIONER – DISTRICT 2

For District 2, Patrick Johnson beat Steven Viau, with 396 votes (55.54%) to Viau’s 316 (44.32%) in the Republican primary. Both candidates have served as county commissioners in the past, but Johnson’s victory means he will unseat Viau from the position Viau has held with the board since 2022.

Because there are no Democrats running for the seat, Johnson will be unopposed in November.

COUNTY COMMISSIONER – DISTRICT 3

Republican voters in District 3 voted to promote Christine Williams to the November election. Williams defeated Barron with 684 votes (61.84%) to Barron’s 420 (37.97%).

Currently-seated Commissioner Myra Croasdell, who is running as an independent, will face Williams in November.

COUNTY COMMISSIONER – DISTRICT 4

District 4 was the only race for a county commission seat to appear on the Democratic ballot. Current Commissioner Kelli van Ginhoven, who was elected to the board as a result of May’s recall election, defeated challenger Jason Sacco.

Van Ginhoven received 512 votes (88.89%) to Sacco’s 63 (10.94%).

Van Ginhoven will face Former Commissioner and Board Chair Dave Moyle, who was unseated by van Ginhoven in the recall election, in November. Moyle is running as a Republican.

COUNTY COMMISSIONER – DISTRICT 5

District 5’s Republican primary was a rematch between the two candidates on May’s recall election ballot. Current Commissioner Matthew Jensen defeated Former Commissioner Bob Petersen, who was unseated in May by Jensen.

Jensen defeated Petersen with 485 votes (65.36%) to Petersen’s 256 (34.50%).

Jensen will be unopposed in November.

ESCANABA TOWNSHIP BOARD

Escanaba Township’s board was guaranteed a shakeup as a result of Tuesday’s election, as Trustee Norman Fleury challenged Supervisor Tom Rymkos on the Republican ballot. Fleury was unsuccessful in his bid to unseat Rymkos, losing his own seat trustee seat on the board in the process.

Fleury’s seat was one of two trustee positions open on the board this election season. Three individuals, Ann LaBumbard, Nathan Paul Neumier and Jake Nyquist saught the two open Republican slots to appear on the November ballot. Voters selected Neumier and LaBumbard, who received 273 votes (34.73%) and 267 votes (33.97%), respectively. Nyquist received 244 votes (31.04%).

A fourth individual, Democrat Trustee Alfred Gareau will face off against Neumier and LaBumbard in the general election.

MAPLE RIDGE TOWNSHIP BOARD

There were two township board positions on the Republican ballot for Maple Ridge Township: clerk and treasurer.

In the clerk race, seated Clerk Susan Sicotte bested challenger Jennifer Lupinski. Sicotte received 130 votes (56.03%) to Lupinski’s 102 (43.97%).

For the treasurer’s seat, seated Treasurer Barb Nummilien defeated challenger Renee Barron. Nummilien received 147 votes (63.36%) to Barron’s 85 (36.64%).

There are no Democrats running for either seat, both Sicotte and Nummilien will run unopposed in November.
